Environmental impact

Environmental impact

Comparison of the production of pollutants (SO2 – sulfur dioxide, TZL – solid pollutants (dust particles), NOx – nitrogen oxides and CO – carbon monoxide) and greenhouse gas emissions of CO2 produced by flue gases when heating a family house with an area of 120 m² according to the type of fuel used ( wood, hard coal, brown coal, natural gas) and EUREX EKO 01 equipment.

The EUREX EKO 01 facility, which is a much lower air pollutant than the above-mentioned family houses, is considered in Slovac republic  as  a facility that recovers waste by thermal processes and its operation requires a mandatory environmental impact assessment (EIA) without limit. This also means when recovering one kg plastic waste per year.

Calorific value of EUREX EKO 01 process gas:                 41.40 Mj / m³ = 11.5 kWh / m³

Calorific value of natural gas:                                               34.92 Mj / m³ = 9.7 kWh / m³

The EUREX EKO 01 device uses its own treated and cleaned process gas as a medium for generating the necessary process heat at start-up and after starting up at operating temperature uses own treated and purified process gas. Process gas has a higher calorific value, but also a higher density, so in this comparison we consider the production of emissions from the combustion of process gas at the level of emissions from the combustion of natural gas.

For a family house with an area of 120 m2, we consider a maximum required energy of 15 kW / h.

For the EUREX EKO 01, the maximum energy demand from all combustion processes is 75 kW / h.

For a large part of the heating period (roughly up to three quarters of the season), 15 to 50% of the nominal boiler output is sufficient for heating in the home.

Also, after the start of the operating temperature of the EUREX EKO 01 device, a 30-50% heat output is sufficient.

For this reason, we are considering the maximum output of heat sources for both the family house and the EUREX EKO 01 device.

From the above comparison, it is clear that the technological equipment in all combustion processes in 1 hour of operation at maximum energy consumption produces less pollutants than a family house at maximum energy consumption per hour when heating with wood. Compared to a family house heated by black coal, it is almost 6 times less pollutants, and in a family house heated by brown coal, it is almost 10 times less pollutants.

Compared to a family house heated by natural gas, the EUREX EKO 01 device produces less than 5 times the pollutants of a family house.

It should be emphasized that, in addition to heating, family houses also produce emissions from food preparation, maintenance (mowing, etc.) and other activities.

In terms of comparing CO2 greenhouse gas production, the EUREX EKO 01 produces approximately as many emissions per hour of maximum operation as 2.5 family houses burning solid fuels and 5 family houses burning natural gas.

According to the estimates of the Ministry of the Environment, we have approximately 350,000 households burning solid fuels in the Slovak Republic, of which 36%, ie 126,000, have a boiler older than 30 years (source: https://www.cepta.sk/index.php/sk/air-quality).

These family houses, which are the biggest air pollutants, do not need an environmental impact assessment in accordance with Act no. 24/2006 Coll.

The EUREX EKO 01 facility, which is a much lower air pollutant than the above-mentioned family houses, is considered to be a facility that recovers waste by thermal processes and its operation requires a mandatory environmental impact assessment without limit. This also means when recovering one kg per year.
